2021/22 Hobby Season To-Do List

It is time to join the 2021/22 Hobby Season with 40kaddict.  This is the fifth season I'm formally taking part in and I'm looking forward to earning my stamps!

My To Do List for the 2021/22 season:

The Horus Heresy

  • Complete Dark Angels Legion Inner Circle Knights Cenobium
  • Complete Dark Angels Legion Deathwing Companions
Warhammer 40K
  • Kill Team - Complete DKoK team
  • Complete five Intercessors
  • Complete a Vehicle
  • Complete a Grey Knights unit
Adeptus Titanicus
  • Complete Legio Ignatum Warmaster Titan
  • Complete Legio Tempestus Warlord
  • Complete Legio Tempestus Warbringer
  • Complete some more weapon options
Blackstone Fortress
  • Complete Starter Set
Bonus Projects:
  • Complete another Unit for the Custodes
  • Complete some Aeronautica Imperialis models
  • Complete a Dark Angels Legion Vehicle
  • Complete The Lion (Am I ready?!)

As I head into the hobby season, anything on the hobby shelves will be fair game as long as I make progress each month.  In this way, the list of goals will focus, but not constrain my efforts. I am not playing any games, nor do I compete at all, so I do not need to work towards any external constraints.  This work is pure hobby joy for me - a chance to break form the responsibilities Husband/Father/Worker and just chill out with something I'm really into.

I've chosen to keep 30K/40K/AT as the three main games I want to put time into.  Blackstone Fortress stays on the list since I'm sooo close to finishing the initial box of models. I've had only a couple games of socially distanced AT in 2020 which raised my interest in completing more titans. I need to complete the first Warmaster (MonsterMarch?) with a new version releasing soon (something new for Tempestus?)

So let's see how the season turns out.  I welcome you to join me on this journey into the unknown as we enter into the 2021/22 Hobby Season. We have goals, but we also know there will be lots of new stuff coming out as we work on it all...how will the season turn out?

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Results from the 2020/21 Hobby Season

Greetings and welcome back to 262krieg. It's time to put a close to the 2020/21 hobby season and appreciate the projects that managed to get completed. I started the year with the goal of painting up the marines from the Indomitus boxed set in Dark Angels colors by the end of the year (2020).  I got a good start on the assault intercessors but then paused for DreadTober 2020.

First Legion Leviathan Dreadnought

This First Legion Leviathan Dreadnought was my first completion of the season.  I was great fun to paint and represents the third First Legion dreadnought that I have painted for DreadTober.

Dark Angels Assault Intercessors

With DreadTober complete, I went back and finished the squad of Indomitus assault intercessors. This is the second full squad of Primaris marines I have painted so far, many more would follow.

Dark Angels Eradicators

Next, I knocked off the squad of Eradicators.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Outriders

The Outriders followed.  This is the very first Ravenwing unit that I have ever completed (since 3rd edition...).  Yikes.  I have some many legacy Ravenwing models built and primed too.

Dark Angels Bladeguard

Then I sunk my teeth into the Bladeguard.  These boys were fun to paint, especially after painting nothing but black and green armor for months.

Aeronautica Imperialis Bases

I took a break and painted up all of the Aeronautica Imperialis bases that I had at the time.  I got inspired by some of the great paint jobs out there on the web and got to work.  I have no idea when we'll get painted planes to go on these bases though. 😁 Perhaps that was not the best use of my hobby time...

Dark Angels Deathwing Lieutenant

Then I had to get back to Indomitus and paint the characters, starting with the lieutenant (or Blade Guard Sergeant, depending on how you look at it). It's now December.

Dark Angels Bladeguard Ancient

The Ancient came next.  Very fun to paint, but December was slipping by...and it would turn out that this was the last model to get painted in 2020. Not bad at all, with only two Characters left to paint, I had painted 21 of the 23 marines inside my deadline - and completed a big Dread to boot (I'm trying to forget about those distracting bases...)

Dark Angels Deathwing Master

Starting 2021, I needed to get the Indomitus characters complete before Squaduary and MonsterMarch. I was very pleased with how the Captain/Master came out. Painting these Indomitus models in Deathwing colors just gets excited to paint more.

Dark Angels Judiciar

Last up for the Indomitus box was the Judiciar. He's an odd duck, but I had a good time painting him none-the-less.

Dark Angels Chaplain

The Judiciar prompted me to paint a proper Chaplain for the force as well, now that I had completed the Indomitus models.

Dark Angels Librarian

I rounded out the force by tweaking a prior Blades of Vengeance Librarian to join the force. The Blades of Vengeance will be using Vangguard models so they get the Librarian in Phobos armor. This set of characters rounded off the force and gave me a number of options to play with.  It became a good stopping point, and I got it all done before Squaduary 2021. Great accomplishments so far.

Blackstone Fotress Traitor Guardsmen

For Squaduary 2021, I decided to complete the hostiles for Blackstone Fortress by painting up the 14 traitor guardsmen. I don't paint a lot of chaos so this was quite a different pallet for me.

Ordo Sinister Warlord-Sinister Battle Titan

Then it was time for #MonsterMarch5.  I don't paint monsters generally so it's been my tradition to paint large titans for Adeptus Mechanicus instead.  This is my third in as many years.  I had so much fun with it that I was inspired to plow ahead with Legio Ignatum.

Legio Ignatum Reaver Battle Titan

I added a second Reaver Battle Titan.

Legio Ignatum Warhound Battle Titans

And then two Warhounds. This gave me five titans for the Legio plus the Warlord-Sinister as reinforcements (or a proxy Warlord titan if needed). Now I had 13 engines painted in total between Legio Tempestus, Legio Ignatum, and Ordo Sinister.

Moon Elf Sorceror Meryn Yes'gella

I took a break form titans to paint a figure to represent a D&D 5th edition character I had been playing over zoom since shortly before Covid set in. My heart wasn't in the project though, so this is as far as I got.  It's here as an honorable mention, since it represents me breaking away from 30/40K for a change.

Blackstone Fortress Explorer Janus Draik

Then I painted up Janus Draik as the first of my Blackstone Fortress Explorers.  I had hoped to paint four Explorers, but one will have to do.

Dark Angels Redemptor Dreadnought

Then for pretty much no reason, I got inspired to paint this Redemptor Dreadnought to reinforce the ark Angels Indomitus force. I love all dreadnoughts, but this guy was seriously fun to build and paint.

Dark Angels Intercessor Squad

Having put so much effort into the Dark Angels already this season, I then I felt it was time to paint the Heavy Intercessors and add a unit of Intercessors into the bargain.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessor Squad

I batch painted the ten models and yikes....it took some time.  But I got it done, and for that I am plenty pleased.  They didn't come out half bad either!

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn and Daemonhost Cherubael

While painting the Intercessors, I learned about the 2021 Inquisitorial Conclave run over at The Neverness Hobby Chronicle. I love a good community hobby challenge and have had nothing for the summer months, so I jumped in with this Model of Gregor Eisenhorn. And with a little time left to me, I even tossed the daemonhost Cherubael into the mix to complete two models for the Conclave this year.

And that, my friends, is where the hobby season ended for me.  What a great set of models. 52 infantry models, two dreadnoughts, and four AT titans completed in one season.  That's a great haul here at 262Krieg and I'm grinning from ear-to-ear as I write this down. That's not even mentioning any of the great builds that went on throughout the year and now sit on the shelves waiting for a future season to paint them. Let's see how that stacks up with the seasons To-Do list?

My To Do List for the 2020/21 season:

The Horus Heresy

  • Complete all new First Legion units released (or to be released) by Forge World. (Partial - Leviathan)
Warhammer 40K
  • Complete Dark Angels from the Indomitus Crusade Box by 12/31/2020
Adeptus Titanicus
  • Complete Legio Ignatum Reaver Titan
  • Complete Legio Ignatum Warhounds (2)
  • Complete Sinister Warlord Titan
Blackstone Fortress
  • Complete Starter Set (Partial - Hostiles done)
Aeronautica Imperialis
  • Complete models from Wings of Vengeance (NOPE - nice bases though...)
Bonus Projects:
  • Complete another House Taranis Questoris Knight for Warhammer 40K (NOPE)
  • Complete another Unit of Custodes (NOPE)
Well, not so bad.  I hit many of the high points.  There was some extra units for the Dark Angels beyond Indomitus, and only a couple side projects (Moon Elf Sorcerer and Eisenhorn)

What will the 2021/22 season bring?  You'll have to check back next week to find out, when I post up my TO-DO list for the season. Of course, we all know to-do lists are guidance at best, and toilet paper at worst. I don't really know what the winds of hobby will blow across my desk.  But I know the projects will be grand and I look forward to seeing what the Community at large puts forth alongside my own work.

Be safe out there and keep on hobbying.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

2021 Inquisitional Conclave - Gregor Eisenhorn and Cherubael - TO DONE

Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn and Cherubael

Greetings fellow hobbyists.  Today I announce that my project for the 2021 Inquisitorial Conclave is DONE.  What follows is a big stamp o' DONE for the completion and some follow up picks from the light box after the break.

This brings the 2020/21 hobby season to a close here at 262Krieg.  I look forward to getting a copy of the new Kill Team box. The 2021/22 hobby season promises to have more KRIEG in it. I'm also looking forward to DreadTober 2022.  Lots of fun projects planned.

 Stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

2021 Inquisitional Conclave - Gregor Eisenhorn WIP - Week 3

Cherubael WIP

Greetings.  For week three of the 2021 Inquisitorial Conclave (my week 2 for the project) I completed Eisenhorn and started on his buddy Cherubael.  Cherubael is a Deamonhost and a bonus part to this project since I wasn't certain to get Gregor done in time.

Cherubael WIP

It all started here where I experimented with a pale, corrupted flesh and the notion of warp power emanating from within the daemonhost.  It's odd, and totally NOT in my normal repertoire, but I became inspired and decided to keep it.  I especially liked the glowing eyes and light coming out of the open mouth.

Cherubael WIP

This led to more base colors, shading and highlighting as I fleshed out the model and it began to take shape.   The painting went rather quickly and spontaneously.  I had only the vaguest notion of what I wanted here, based on five-to-ten minutes of google image searching to see what others had done with this model.

Cherubael WIP

And ultimately I ended up here. The trapped daemon, Cherubael is clearly conjuring warp power, but remains held in check by the powerful wards that Gregor Eisenhorn has put in place.  Metal, scrolls, leather, and red cloth are all pretty much stock from my usual recipes. This model is painted primarily with ProAcryl paints from Monument Hobbies, with GW shades and a couple washes form Secret Weapon Miniatures (Flesh Wash, and Cool Grey).

Cherubael WIP

The base was painted to match Eisenhorn's.  Here are the two models together.  I'm pausing to consider whether or not to be done.

Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn and Daemonhost Cherubael WIP

Taken in all, these have been quite enjoyable to paint and a welcome diversion from my normal selection of projects.  I am proxying Cherubael with the resin "Captive Unleashed" model from Artel "W" Miniatures.  The model is also available in 54mm scale which would make a great painting project.

So that's where I'm at with this project.  It's probably done, but we'll see.  I'll certainly post up a "TO DONE" post with light box pictures next week, regardless.  Are they done?...yeah...well, maybe....

Stay safe out there!

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

2021 Inquisitional Conclave - Gregor Eisenhorn WIP - Week 2 progress

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

Gregor Eisenhorn walks!  Entering week three of the 2021 Inquisitional Conclave  (week 2 for me), I have completed enough of the model to mount it on the base. All areas of the model have been painted now, and most highlights have been applied. I've danced quite a bit around the face, so much so it seems Gregor has been using relying heavily on juvinat treatments lately. 😆 I'm mostly content with the results, though I'm not thrilled with the eyes so they may change before the week is out.

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

I love the base and it felt great to pin the model to it at last. I used a brown .005 Micron pen to ink some text onto the left shoulder purity seal.  It's such an easy cheat.

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

I'm liking the heavy leather cloak a lot. The ornate bolt pistol is pretty cool too.

The model is largely complete at this point and could be left as is.  However, since I have a few more days before heading out on vacation, I will lavish more attention on it.  There is no time to pick up a new project this month anyway. So I'll clean up a few things, highlight a few others, and generally bring this model TO DONE by the end of the week when I'll put up my last post for August.

Until then,stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

2021 Inquisitional Conclave - Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

credit: The Neverness Hobby Chronicle

Greetings and welcome to my first post of the 2021 Inquisitorial Conclave.  This is my first year participating.  As it happened, I had this sitting on the shelf waiting for my time...

40K Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

It was primed black sometime ago using my typical choice of Vallejo Surface Primer Black.  So it was really no problem to pick it up and start painting, now that my Intercessors were complete.  Now...will I finish?  That remains yet to be seen, but I'm all in for trying.  I have some camping with the family at the end of August, so I really have just this week and next to get the Inquisitor completed...and I guess the last couple days of the month when I'm back from the woods to finish up if need be.

40K Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP40K Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

I'm using Monument Hobbies Pro Acryl paints for this project with some added GW Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthsahde on top here and there.  I'm and "inside out" painter for the most part.  So I got started blocking in the undersides of the various flappy layers, the pants, and the boots.  Then I looked at the shirt and started adding on some other bits like the holster and other straps.  This is always a fun time because the model typically looks rather terrible at this point.

40K Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP40K Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

After various layers of shade, details started to appear and old Gregor started to take shape.  He still looks pretty bad though, if I'm being honest.  But this is all part of the process. If one can stick it out to cross this divide, beauty waits on the far side.

I took a break at his point to look at the base.  I had been dabbling with it while waiting for various shades to dry.

Back when i assembled Gregor, I added some of my typical model railroad gravel mix around the resin rubble to fill the base in more naturally.  So after priming, I simply covered the whole thing in a medium/light grey and gave it a coat of Monument Hobbies Pro Acryl Transparent Black. It's a bit like a contrast paint from GW, but not as goopy...sort of between contrast and Nuln Oil.  Anyway, it thins well for controlling how dark things get.

Then it was an easy matter to pick out the details.  I'm cleaving to the box art for Gregor as I felt it already looked pretty cool and I didn't see what I was likely to do to improve on it.  That and I'm a helplessly avid follower of the cannon in any case.

40K Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

The base is now ready to receive Gregor when he's prepared.  I tidied up a bit and added details like the rebar, shell cases, and odd demonic skull bit. Not 100% thrilled with the skull so we'll see where that ends up later.  Here, you can see the latest shade layer is still drying.

But that's where I'm at so far in week two of the Conclave.  A late start, but I've leapt in with some gusto and we'll see where that enthusiasm takes me.

Stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Dark Angels Intercessors and Heavy Intercessors - TO DONE

Greetings.  Today I put to rest the Intercessor project with a big old stamp of DONE.

This project took a bit longer than I expected, but some of that was down to vacations and summer in general effecting how much time I could commit to the hobby.  I had a good time painting these models all the same and it was a satisfying project, taken in all.

There are more closeups from the light box after the break.

Stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Dark Angels Intercessor and Heavy Intercessor WIP - Part 5

Dark Angels Intercessors and Heavy Intercessors WIP

Greetings! The intercessors edge ever closer to done.  I really didn't expect these ten marines to stall me so completely. Regardless, they are coming out just fine and progress is being made.  For this week, I have managed some freehand on the 5th company badges for the knee pads.

Dark Angels Intercessor WIP

Getting the lines for the checks to look right on the rounded knee pads could drive a person insane. It should be simple to draw/paint a cross and fill in the sections. It turns out a bit more challenging than one might expect, at least for me. 😖

Dark Angels Intercessors WIP

Next up were the decals/transfers.  I very much enjoy applying decals, so this went well and was a nice break from painting.

Dark Angels Intercessors WIP

I have no real rhyme nor reason to my squad numbering.  Here I decided this was my first squad of intercessors so they got to be squad '1'.  But with the Heavy Intercessors...

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

I randomly decided these lads would be squad '2', maybe because they were the second squad of intercessors?  They also got some shiny new wings on the other shoulder.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

As a detail, the skulls on the Sergeant helmets were painted bone, and the scrolls all got some text using a black fine point marker (with some red here and there). Oh, and the guns got an additional orange highlight over the previous red highlights to brighten things up a bit.

The decals will get a coat of GW Lahmian Medium, followed by a light wash to blend them with the look of the rest of the armor.   like to give the Micro Sol a decent amount of time to dry. After this treatment, the decals will blend better and won't pop quite as much.

Bases need to get done and some final details, like the Sergeant's equipment (write computer on one , and augury hanging form the belt of the other) need work. I'd like to say one more session, but we'll see.

In the meantime, stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!
