Review: Versatile Terrain Custom Name Plates

Greetings.

Today I'm posting something new on the blog:  a review!  I came across Versatile Terrain's custom name plate service through a recent Spikey Bits article. It struck me that while impractical for large armies, this was a fantastic idea from small skirmish games like Necromunda or Kill Team. Having just completed building and priming a handful of teams I decided to try the product out on one of them.

When I put together my Adeptus Mechanicus team, I used all the table sin the rule book to name the members and give them personalities.  So this was the perfect team for this exercise.  I jumped on the Versatile Terrain web site and placed my order.  It was an easy process to select a base size and plate design, then the font and quantity of plates/names to order.  Once added to the cart, it's time to enter the list of names.  I was very careful here to put in the correct names!

For my ad-mech force, I needed three 40mm and five 30mm bases.  By mistake, I ordered two 40mm and six 30mm bases, but it all worked out in the end.  The order was placed and shipped six days later.  I was even emailed the day before the order shipped to let me know all was well.  I have had good communications throughout the process.  When the order arrived, here's how they looked:

Versatile Terrain Custom Name Plates for my Adeptus Mechanicus Kill Team

Brilliant!  The print and details are sharp and clear and the arcs line up well with the sector mechanicus bases I had chosen for the kill team. I felt this was a risk since it might be that the sector mechanicus bases might not be identical in shape to a standard black plastic base.  The bases are cast in resin which allows for some shaping if you apply a little heat.  This helps me make sure my mistaken 30mm plate fit around a 40mm base.

I lined up a base with a model to be sure I had everything right.  Then I set to work removing the sprue, cleaning things up and then gluing them down.  The sprue comes off very easily.  I used standard flush cutters as I would with any sprue, but I could have carefully snapped them off with my fingers too.  Super glue (Cyanoacrylate) in small amount was used to glue the plates onto the bases. Some care was needed to keep things lined up well while the glue set.  You don't want a slow drying epoxy or other glue here, in my opinion.

Here's how things look on a 30mm base.

From the bottom, you can see the plate lines up well with the curve of the base.

And the same from the top.  With these sector mechanicus bases, I made sure to line things up so the rivets on the plate appear to go into the base instead of thin air since there are voids/low spots on the edges of the bases.

Here here is Amu-8869 with his new name plate attached.  As you might imagine, things went as well for a 40mm base.

Everything continues to line up well.

Lookin' good...

And here is Kappic-XIX with his new nameplate.  I specifically chose what I thought passed for a Gothic look with a digital font for the Ad-Mech.  There were plenty of good choices for plate and font styles. Here is a shot of the team with their name plates applied.

Click through to see this close up.  On the front right you can see the 30mm name plate attached to the 40mm base I chose for the Skitarii with the Transuranic Arquebus. when ordering, I simply forgot that I had used a large base size on that one Skitarii.  It fit just fine with a minor amount of heat applied to prevent it from looking two warped. The results stand for them selves.

I really liked the product and will likely order plates for my other teams as well. I'm particularly interested in plates for my House Taranis Knights as this is a great way to display the creative names and add some personality to the models.

I give the Versatile Terrain custom name plate service two enthusiastic thumbs up!!

Next up, I'll get back to the Questoris Knight Paladin. I've done work on the weapons and will have more to show on that soon.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Taking a Break...Happy Holidays!!

I'm stepping away from the blog for a few weeks while I focus on the family and our holiday celebrations.  Over the break I'll be checking out the Dark Angels codex and considering my next projects.  Deathwatch and Grey Knights still await of course, and I'm looking forward to mixing in some Dark Angels projects in the New Year as well.  I see a decent amount of interest in the Sector Mechanicus terrain projects I posted earlier this year, So I expect I'll need to get some of that painted up as well.  Plenty of fun projects await! I am looking at how to put in more how-to content for 2018 so I'm not just showing of my work. I read so much good content out there on other blogs and its time I did my best to contribute as well.

As I close out 2017, here's a look at what I was able to accomplish.  It all got started with Squaduary 2017 when I was able to complete a squad of Deathwatch marines.

Squaduary 2017 project

The I built and painted some scatter terrain and a couple sets of the Munitorum containers.

Munitorum Armored Containers Blue

Munitorum Armored Containers Red

The Custodes I recently completed got built in the spring of this year, and the sector Mechanicus terrain came out.

I dabbled in Shadow Wars: Armageddon, building Orc, Space Marine, Astra Militarum and Harlequin war bands.  I even dabbled in painting Orks again.

Death Skullz Ork

And I tried out a Tempestus Scions paint scheme for my Imperial Guard war band.  I'll get these finished up one day, but they were put aside for now.  I don't get nearly enough time to play and Necromunda now looks like a more compelling rule set...and I was eager to use what little game play opportunities I had for 8th edition 40K.

I posted an article about my efforts adding extra shelves to my Ikea display cases. This was a great project as it doubled my display capacity without requiring any more square footage from my already cramped hobby cave.

Same ol' cabinet, twice the shelf space!

There was a good deal of modelling Deathwatch marines and the adding Grey Knight characters from the new codex.  And the Deathwatch Watch Master got painted.

Then it was time for Dreadtober and a fully painted Grey Knight Grand Master in Nemesis Dreadknight!  This was such a fun project...modest in the customization, but ambitious (for me) int he painting!

Hot on the heels of this character, I decided to paint up my Grey Knight Librarian.

And I finished with my Custodes assembled earlier in the spring...

That's fourteen completed models and a handful of completed terrain (scatter pieces and containers) plus a large number of general assemblies for Deathwatch, Grey Knights, Shadow Wars: Armageddon and Sector Mechanicus Terrain. Quite a haul for one year by my previous standards.  I hope to outdo this for 2018 and keep the hobby momentum rolling forward.

I will leave you with my Best wishes for the holidays and a very Happy New Year!

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Results from the 2016/17 Hobby Season

As I align my own hobby work with 40KAddict's hobby season, it's time to reflect on what I got done since September of 2016. My hobby ToDo list was intentionally long and filled more with opportunity than direct goals and I had no intent of knocking off the whole list.  For the 2017/18 season, I am thinking of modifying that approach...but that's a tale for another post.

What got accomplished in 2016/17?

My Deathwatch force started to take shape:

I participated in Dreadtober 2016 as the Deathwatch work continued:

Then it was on to Squaduary 2017 and the Deathwatch caught more paint:

I completed some scatter terrain:

And some Munitorum containers:

Munitorum Armored Containers Red

Munitorum Armored Containers Blue

Munitorum Armored Containers Yellow

And dabbled with a unit of the Emperor's praetorians:

And dabbled with Shadow Wars: Armageddon:

Space Marine Scouts

Astra Militarum Death Korps of Krieg

Deathskull Ork

And made some beats lab improvements:

And finally, the Grey Knights landed...

Grey Knight Chaplain WIP

That's quite a season of hobby for me! Some solid progress here and there; some flights of fancy as well along the way.  I am very happy where I got my terrain to and I have already enjoyed a few Shadow Wars and 8th ed. 40K games on it.  Some Deathwatch progress, but lots more to do.  And a good deal of Grey Knight enthusiasm as I head into the new hobby season. And these are just the highlights I culled from past blog posts. There were other bits here and there as well that got done for which I have no pictures (lots more deathwatch were built and primed. the new 8th ed. 40K objective markers set got built, etc...).

For the next season I'd like to continue exploring and honing my painting skills.  It is all to easy for me to fall back on building models, which I love, instead of buckling down and getting on with the painting of it all.I will look for new events like Squaduary and Dreadtober for incentive to complete quality projects and will kick myself to fit in a few more on my own initiative. I expect to make more progress on the Deathwatch and to turn up the heat on my Grey Knights.  I'm even setting a goal to paint at least one of my currently unpainted squads of Dark Angels, possibly including a transport.

It's going to be a fun and busy season. Best of luck for your own projects and ambitions.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Progress, progress, progress!

A short post to share recent progress as June comes to a close.  I'm pretty excited to play the new edition of 40K and after fielding my Deathwatch in my first game the bug to continue the progress I started last fall is back! What I realized I was lacking was BIKES! In the first codex, I didn't get how they really fit into Kill Teams, and they couldn't be used standalone in the Deathwatch formations/detachments. Now in the new edition, they are back as a sanctioned stand alone unit for Deathwtach, plus add a new ability to kill teams they join - shooting in the same turn the unit withdraws from combat, which normally is not allowed. I had the White Scar model from kill team Cassius, so five more would allow me the option to field two minimum units of three, or break one unit up to mix with other kill teams, etc..

Deathwatch Bikers WIP

So of course I had to buy a box and get them assembled.  I went heavy with the hand weapons as it seems a waste to run them with just the bolters on the bike. I may regret that when playing with points instead of power levels, but we'll see. The group above is led by a Dark Angels Ravenwing biker as a nod to my long time favorite Space Marine chapter. In all, I included members from the Dark Angels, Iron Hands, White Scars, Ultra Marines and Black Templars chapters in this squad.

Deathwatch Bikers WIP

So far I have only gotten as far as priming (Vallejo Black Primer) and base coating the armor (Abaddon Black) with the air brush. The I took a break to put some flesh on the Ork boyz! Basecoat and the first shade/wash layer in the picture below. I'm using the paint recipe form the GW painting guide for Ork boys. Not being a dedicated Ork player, I saw to reason to break with cannon and innovate here. I just want some simple, but good lookin' boyz to field.

Shadow Wars: Armageddon

And not content there, I decided I needed a little more Shadow Wars terrain for my Mechanicum Sector; shown below in all it's emergent glory...

Sector Mechanicus Terrain WIP

Plenty of terrain for games of Shadow Wars now, and plenty of interest to spice up the occasion 40K game board too.

Sector Mechanicus Terrain WIP

The tile on the bottom right of the photos is the new work in progress.  Based on the Ferratonic Incinerator kit, I need to pick up another walkway sprue on eBay to give it a little more dimension on the second story (including more railings).  In order to have the third bridge to connect tiles, I had to sacrifice two of the walkway/gantry pieces that come with that kit. I also laid down a few more sections of promethium pipes on a couple of the tiles to give more cover at the ground level as well.

I'll stop here with six Sector Mechanicus tiles to compliment my existing set of six Imperial Sector tiles. Plenty of great terrain now...and really where will I have the time to paint twelve tiles anyway?!  Well...'ll get it properly based, and primed black anyway...then we'll see where I end up.

That's a lot of hobby for me.  I expect another painting session tonight to round out June.  I'm still torn between painting kill teams and Deathwatch...and terrain...plenty of variety anyway.  Hopefully some more games will come too!

What projects are you looking forward too this summer?

Cheers and Happy Gaming!
