Ravenwing Chaplain and ATV WIP - Part 3

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain on Bike WIP

Ah, the leering skull helm of a Chaplain. Such a thing to behold. I'm almost TO DONE on these models and so close to DreadTober. I need another session to take a long last look and touch up things, correct missing highlights, etc.  No worries...?

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain on Bike WIP

The Chaplain's base was completed.  Nothing fancy, and fits in nicely with what has gone before in this collection of Dark Angels. I am imagining that a grey rock might have set things off better, standing between the black and the brown.  But prior models got this look so I kept at it for consistency when the whole force is displayed together.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain on Bike WIP

Here is the (almost) completed model permanently mounted to the base.

A couple different angles here for reference, in case you are looking for a view at specific details. Seems suitably Ravenwing for my tastes!

Next up, I decided to mount the ATV on a base as I've seen others out here do.  It just fits in better when grouped in a squad with the bikes. Great opportunity to repurpose a spare base from the bits pile.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Invader ATV WIP

Nothing fancy here, just the same glued down gravel treatment and the same paint recipe, of course. Simple, but quick, cheap and effective.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Invader ATV WIP

I think it helps balance the model, which isn't as big as a tank. It will certainly prevent me from breaking off one of those front wheels in the future, if nothing else.  I dunno; I just like it!

I'm coming to the finish line with a couple days to get these models TO DONE. Shouldn't be a problem.  I'll have one more post up with the completion, but then its all DreadTober for the next month. Check back 10/1 when I reveal the model I'm painting for the annual challenge. Until then, keep your powder dry and your chins up!

Cheers and Happy gaming!

Ravenwing Chaplain and ATV WIP - Part 2

Dark Angels Ravenwing WIP

Progress!  Welcome back.  Today I'm sharing more progress on the Ravenwing filler project I took on to bide time until DreadTober kicks off.  The project is going well and I'm pleased with the results so far.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Invader ATV WIP

The Invader ATV is the farthest along.  The driver and steering console is now glued in.  The gunner and guns are dry fitted only.  Due to the easy-build nature of these models the pegs hold things just fine, at least as long as they last.  I'll no doubt have to glue the gunner in one day when the feet pegs break off.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Invader ATV WIP

I did my best to take a light hand with the armor highlights. I'm getting better with thin highlights here, which is cool.  I'm continuing with a color scheme I settled on with earlier projects.  I think if I had it to do over, I might have gone with blue-black rather than grey highlights.  But I don't hate these results.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Invader ATV WIP
Most details are complete, such as the gunner's pistol holster.  I used brown and black shades on the back deck to give a worn but not totally rusted look...this is an Astartes vehicle after all, and well looked after for all that.
Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Invader ATV WIP

I haven't settled on how I want to highlight/weather the tires.  I think I punted on this with my first Primaris Outrider squad as well. 😂 I have yet to lay down the red highlights among a few other bits and bobs.  But this model is very close to done.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain on Bike WIP

So, on to the Chaplain. This models almost paints itself.  The details are plentiful and sharp - easy to set a brush to. At this point, enough of the model was completed to glue down the legs and upper torso. Up to this point, these parts were painted as sub-assemblies. I want to spend some time on the head - a Chaplains skull helmet is a focus point on the model after all - so it's the least advanced at this point.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain on Bike WIP

I put time in on the book most recently.  Rather than some fancy collector's edition, I wanted this book to be more utilitarian. A well worn dictionary or daily cookbook of the 2nd company. So I've gone with a plain leather binding and leather book mark.  I have some more weathering to do to advance the worn look.  I like how things are turning out though, esp. with the chains securing the book to the bike. At the risk of sounding pedantic, I might have secured the book with the spine facing forward if I wasrhis Chaplain. Much less drag and wear and tear on the book when it isn't scooping all the wind. 😁

Things show up will in profile here.  I'll get the Ravenwing transfers applied soon and that will reinforce the Ravenwing heraldry. Lots of details to go here, but he's starting to come to life.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain on Bike WIP

Oh boy...that mace/Crozius! That has to be a real problem to bike with. :) Thank goodness for Astartes strength. One could imagine the wind whipping that thing away in an instant while barreling down on the foe. Aaaany way.  It looks just fine with it's recent coat of paint. I'll put some final highlights on it at some point.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain on Bike WIP

So almost through and plenty of month left to complete what's left. This is a very characterful model and a pleasure to work with.  I hope my sharing it will inspire your own projects. Should have fairly complete models for the next post.  Check back later to see how they come out.

Cheers and Happy gaming!

Ravenwing Chaplain and ATV WIP - Part 1

Dark Angels Ravenwing WIP

Lots of bits to paint!  Greetings and welcome back.  I'm putting paint on the Invader ATV and Chaplain for the Ravenwing portion of my primaris Dark Angels collection this week. I held off posting earlier this week because, well, there just isn't much to share at this stage.  Lots of bits getting a little paint...pretty standard fare for the hobby.  Just base coats and shades getting laid down at this point.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Invader ATV WIP

I attended to the Ravenwing details first; then some gun casings and a few steel/metal bits. Then I painted the tires with Vallejo Dark Rubber and applied a generous coat of GW Nuln Oil. I will go into the ATV cockpit and get all the details painted next so I can assemble the front.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain on Bike WIP

Pretty much the same drill with the Chaplain with the exception of some gold details added there.  To make the exhaust pipes stand out as different from other metals, I chose a Vallejo Oily Steel shaded with GW Seraphim Sepia.  Over the weekend, I should get things far enough along that I can assemble the models.  At that point I'll look at the rest of the details and begin highlighting.

So, short post for today.  More to show for certain next week! Just two more weeks to get these models TO DONE and off the painting table so I can get to work on my DreadTober 2023 project, a perennial favorite here at 262Krieg.

Best of luck with your projects this week.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

On the Workbench [ September] - Ravenwing!

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Outriders Squad WIP

Greetings and welcome back.  Today I'm sharing my first project of the 2023/24 Hobby Season - a fully loaded Ravenwing Outrider squad w/Primaris Chaplain on Bike.  I plan to complete the Invader ATV and the Chaplain in September with the rest of the bikes to follow after DreadTober.  But we'll see where this ultimately ends up.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Invader ATV WIP

These push fit models can be easy to separate into sub-assemblies for painting.  I'm otherwise gluing the models together for stability.  I like that the weapons come complete and can easily be swapped in and out with out even using magnets.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Invader ATV WIP

Everything assembles smoothly.

And the ATV has been bling-ed out by the Ravenwing.  You might have noticed in the other pics that I also used heads form the Ravenwing Black knights kit for the crew. Painted up, the Invader and crew should look suitably Ravenwing.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain on Bike WIP

I'm looking forward to painting this Chaplain.  A very cool model for the Ravenwing!  I bling-ed out the front fork with Ravenwing icons and put a banner pole on the black as I did with my first Outrider squad.  With an appropriate paint job, this fella should look the part.

An extra purity seal or too seals the deal.

Dark Angels Ravenwing Primaris Outriders WIP

I picked up extra bikes back along on eBay and was surprised that I had six and not three in the bag.  Memory is one of the first things to go with age, I guess.  The static poses leave these guys looking somewhat redundant.  However, I decided not to make that a thing with this squad.  Certainly I could go in with some scratch building techniques and make some changes, but I just don't thing its worth the time for this squad.  The current datasheet allows for a full squad in 10th to have six bikes and an ATV, so that's how this unit will roll.  The chaplain then joins this squad for support or, or my first painted squad of three as a body guard. Like the Chaplain, these outriders got upgraded with banner poles and Ravenwing icons.

And everyone gets the same base treatment, or course, to match my existing collection. For new readers, this is just a good coat of wood glue and a quick dunk into a bin of mixed size model railroad ballast.  I bought two bags of this stuff (fine and medium grit) back in the mid-to-late 90s (yes, no kidding!) and I'm about half way through it. It has been the exclusive battlefield ground cover for my Dark Angels since 4th edition. 😁

And with that, I'll close for today.  Check back later to see progress on the painting.  The plan is to tackle the Invader ATV and the Chaplain first, and I already have a squad of three painted Ravenwing Outriders.  Sometime later in the season I'll tackle the remaining bikes - maybe for Squaduary?  We'll see...

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

2023/24 Hobby Season Kickoff and To Do List

It is time to join the 2023/24 Hobby Season with 40kaddict.  This is the seventh season that I'm formally taking part in and I'm looking forward to earning my stamps! Special thanks and a shout out to 40kaddict for the cool annual stamps and the inspiration to keep the mojo alive!

My To Do List for the 2023/24 season as it stands today:

The Horus Heresy

  • Complete two Dark Angels Legion Characters
  • Complete two Dark Angels Legion Infantry Units
Warhammer 40K
  • Complete a Ballistus Dreadnought from the Leviathan launch box
  • Complete two Dark Angels Units
    • Chaplain on Bike and Invader ATV - TO DONE
  • Complete Lion El'Jonson
Adeptus Titanicus
  • Complete Legio Tempestus Warmaster Iconoclast Titan
  • Complete Legio Ignatum Warlord Titan
  • Complete some more weapon options
Aeronautica Imperialis
  • Complete Adeptus Astartes Planes
    Bonus Projects:
    • Complete Dark Angels Primaris Repulsor
    • Complete Dark Angels Company Heroes unit
    • Complete Two More Blackstone Fortress Characters
    • A new surprise 40k faction?

So, it's not an aggressive list.  But it leaves room for new releases, unexpected kits that may come available throughout the season, and general inspiration. With DreadTober around the corner, I need to pick a manageable kick-off project for September...Hmmm...

Welcome to the new hobby season!

    Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Adeptus Titanicus Reaver Battle Titans - TO DONE

Adeptus Titanicus Reaver Battle Titans Legio Igantum Legio Tempestus

I took it right up to the line, but the Reaver battle titans got completed by the end of the Hobby Season 2022/23.  I'm excited with the outcome.  Both titans came out well on their own while continuing to fit in seamlessly with the rest of the battle group.  Having the painting recipes really helps.  I'm spending years in most cases building out these collections and it would be easy to forget the correct colors, shades, processes, and what-not.  Seriously - write down your paint recipes!

These engines put a fine cap on the season for me.  Such fun to paint and I get great pleasure from seeing them completed and mixed in with the rest of their brethren.  I'll see about posting up some updated family pictures at some point.  But I think I'll wait until the last two major titans are complete - a Legio Ignatum Warlord, and a Legio Tempestus Warmaster Iconoclast.

Stay tuned for the launch of the 2023/24 season where I will reveal more promised projects and hobby optimism. Oh...and is that DreadTober around the corner? Hmmm....

    Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Results from the 2022/23 Hobby Season

So we've come to the end of another hobby season and it is time to reflect on the season past to discuss what got completed, what did not, and showcase the fruits of my labor.  Here's where the 2022/23 To Do List stands as the hobby season wraps up. Items crossed out were completed, the rest were not. Honestly, I haven't looked back at this list for most of the season so it's interesting for me to see the results.

    The Horus Heresy

    • Complete two Dark Angels Legion Characters
    • Complete two Dark Angels Legion Infantry Units
    • Complete two Dark Angels Legion Vehicles
      • Completed two Predator tanks
    • Complete another Dreadnought
      • Completed a Contemptor Dreadnought
    Warhammer 40K
    • Complete five Intercessors
    Adeptus Titanicus
    • Complete Legio Tempestus Warmaster Iconoclast Titan
    • Complete Legio Tempestus Reaver
    • Complete Legio Ignatum Reaver
    • Complete some more weapon options
    Aeronautica Imperialis
    • Complete another starter box, or another faction.
      • Completed Skies of Fire
    Bonus Projects:
    • Complete Two More Blackstone Fortress Characters
    • Complete a Second Legio Ignatum Warlord Titan
      • Warlord Built...

Here's what got completed that wasn't on the list:

    The Horus Heresy

    • Completed The Lion
    • Completed a squad of Knights Cenobium
    Warhammer 40K
    • Completed Azrael and 4 other Dark Angels Characters
    • Completed an Aggressor Squad (3 models)
    Aeronautica Imperialis
    • Completed the Wrath of Angels starter box
    • Completed ten Necron Aircraft

Much of this last list got done due to inspiration coming from things that were on the original To Do list. For instance, I enjoyed painting the Skies of Fire planes so much, that I really wanted to complete the third boxed set...and the Necrons! Painting the Predators and Contemptor left me looking forward to finally tackling The Lion and his Knights Cenobium.  The 40K Dark Angels were inspired by past progress and the release of The Lion's 40K self (and the updated Azrael, to be honest).

I kept focus to my primary projects 930K, 40K, AT, AI), even if I didn't complete what was originally on the list.  And I certainly didn't have extra time for the bonus projects - though I am glad I got the AT Warlord built at least. Taken in all, it has been a fun and productive season! 19 Infantry models, 1 30k Primarch (monster sized model), three vehicles, 31 tiny planes and two tiny titans.  Not a bad haul!

Here's a look at what got completed:

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Contemptor Dreadnought

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Predator Tanks

    Aeronautica Imperialis Skies of Fire

    Aeronautica Imperialis Necrons

    Aeronautica Imperialis Wrath of Angels

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Knights Cenobium

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Primarch Lion El'Jonson

    Dark Angels Characters

    Dark Angels Intercessor Squad

    Dark Angels Aggressor Squad

    Adeptus Titanicus Reaver Battle Titans

So that's a wrap on the 2022/23 season - To Do has become TO DONE.  Now it's on to the 2023/24 season.  I'm looking forward to many fun projects lurking on the shelves of my hobby bunker.  I'll put up a post in the next week or so launching the new season officially and sharing a new To Do list.  Looking forward to sharing progress and celebrating the successes and learning moments along the way.

    Cheers and Happy Gaming!
