Dark Angels Azrael WIP

Dark Angels Chapter Master Azrael WIP

Not a lot to share today, other than Azrael has indeed fallen under the brush.  This week I worked primarily on the base and some additional base layers on Azrael's tabbard.

Dark Angels Chapter Master Azrael WIP

The watcher is complete along with the sword and bit of helm on the base.  The helm is oddly 30K Dark Angels - perhaps from a Fallen? Definite Mk. III vibes if you ask me.  SO that's how I painted it. I have some highlighting left on the black of the sheath, but otherwise we're good to go.  I didn't want to have to paint the base around Azrael and so completing it was a priority. Now I'll work on Azrael to a point that he can be glued down to the base without effecting any of the rest of the painting.

And let's have an unnecessary helm close up! Not sure why I took this, but there it is.  Blocked in some base colors and painted the eye lenses, purely because I was painting other characters' eye lenses at the time. Baby steps here, but I did have fun painting the base...

Dark Angels 40K Character WIP - Part 7

Dark Angels Characters WIP
Now with more Techmarine!

Seems hard to believe; but in 25+ years or so of hobby in the 41st millennium, I've only now completed my first Techmarine model. Yay!  The Dark Angels have previously taken to the field with a naked metal or grey plastic mechanic.  But, no more.

Dark Angels Primaris Techmarine WIP

Now sure, amongst us grey beards it's a Primaris Techmarine, so maybe that doesn't even count. 😂 However, I have enjoyed the detail, posing and general aesthetic of most of the Primaris models, so that's where I'm putting my time these days. I know my first born lie sobbing in their foam but that's just how it is.

Dark Angels Primaris Techmarine WIP

I went with Dark Angels armor underfoot to compliment the left shoulder pad and drive home visually that this is a Dark Angels Techmarine.  Otherwise with the Mars red armor, it doesn't stand out.  I imagine he's stomping about trying to restore or recover such machines as can be saved, but that poor rhino will never ride again.

Dark Angels Primaris Techmarine WIP

There is a lot going on with this fella.  I especially like the cog power axe clearly able to repair or sunder in equal measure. As with the other characters, this marine was painted up using Monument Hobbies ProAcryl paint and GW shades.

I almost left off the automated heavy bolter.  But you have to love the over-the-top-ridiculousness of 40K.  It must be super annoying to have this thing chugging away right next to your head, sound dampening helm, or no.  I guess with the hymns of the Omnissiah blasting it isn't so bad.  Just don't tap this guy on the shoulder to get his attention while he's laying down cover fire.  Could cost you your life along with a portion of the squad...

Dark Angels Primaris Techmarine WIP

So that's one Techmarine done, leaving me with Azrael.  These projects are always bigger in my mind than on the painting table.  I mean, I got through The Lion, in his pre-heresy glory right? I can paint one more leader dude in power armor! So why am I so nervous? Odd, that.

Anyway, when next I post there will be some progress on Azrael, Chapter Master of the Dark Angels.

Dark Angels 40K Character WIP - Part 6

Dark Angels Lieutenants WIP
Now with more Lieutenants!

Greetings and welcome back.  The two lieutenants are now complete, making the total four of six done for this project.  I know we're buried in lieutenant models, but they are decent sculpts and fun to paint if you enjoy painting marines at all.  These fellas have a bunch of detail and with a few transfers certainly look the part.

Dark Angels Lieutenant WIP

So many details get caught when posting photos, am I right? here I note that I didn't paint the symbol on the bolt rifle. So I guess he's not quite done! Anyway...typical DA paint recipe here using Pro Acryl paints from Monument Hobbies.

Better shot of the sin of omission here on the bolt rifle.  Seems pretty obvious and hard to miss. 😂

Dark Angels Lieutenant WIP

This is a favorite model of mine.  There is something dynamic in the pose that has always caught my eye. This fella was meant for the Blades of Vengeance, but in true Astartes stoicism he accepted his new orders without complaint and stepped willingly over to the Dark Angels.

So there we have it.  The first two Lieutenant characters painted for my Dark Angels collection. It sure has taken some time to get here, but it feels great to have them painted, along with an Ancient and Master Lazarus. The 5th Company is certainly expanding.

Next up will be the techmarine, and finally I'll get the new Azrael model painted.  Hopefully many of you will find some inspiration in amongst my sharing as I always do when checking out the other blogs out there.

Dark Angels 40K Character WIP - Part 5

Dark Angels Characters WIP

Greetings and happy Cinco de Mayo!  More progress on the Dark Angels characters.  Here, we have the 5th Company Ancient standing with a recently completed Master Lazarus. So that's two models down of the six I started March with.  Slow progress?  Yes.  but I'm quite happy to have two more characters completed with more on the way.

Dark Angels 5th Company Ancient WIP

I had great fun with the banner here.  A few transfers, some fine tipped ink pens, and a lot of paint and tears went into completing this.  I chose to put the Lion's name on this banner as the 5th give honor to their recently returned Primarch.

Dark Angels 5th Company Ancient WIP

This Ancient has even scrawled 'Lion' on his bolter.  They are super psyched to have The Lion back!

Dark Angels 5th Company Ancient WIP

Added a marksman's honor to along with a Veteran's mark on the right shoulder pad.

Dark Angels 5th Company Ancient WIP

Then, since this is an Ancient of the chapter, I added a Legion '1' over a red halo as an honor mark for this marine.  Becoming an Ancient is a great honor and I figured these marines would be highly decorated veterans. And that's that for the 5th Company Ancient!

Dark Angels Lieutenants WIP

With the Ancient complete, I started work on the two lieutenants. The marine on the left was recruited from the Blades of Vengeance.  The chest eagle got a repaint (Red to Ivory), and some shading has been added.  Then he was put aside so I could bring the other Lieutenant up to the same level. No, he's not there yet, but progress. :)

And so the project continues!  Next week I should have two completed Lieutenants if all goes well, leaving me a Tech marine and ultimately Chapter Master Azrael.  It's a great time to be a Dark Angels painter!

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Dark Angels 40K Character WIP - Part 4

Dark Angels Characters WIP

Greetings!  More progress on the Dark Angels characters this week.  The Ancient of the 5th Company Dark Angels got some attention this time around. I was able to get the Ancient painted to a point that the banner arm could be attached.

Dark Angels Ancient WIP

I had fun with the banner. It was an easy thing to cut up a 'Lion el Jonson' transfer so it could fit the curve of the scroll at the bottom of the banner. A bit more poking about found me the right sized #5 to put in the circle at the top and a Dark Angels chapter symbol for the middle.  The rest is all 'paint-by-numbers' raised detail.  The shields and purity seals at the bottom will get text and some additional highlighting is expected. otherwise, the banner is close to complete.

Dark Angels Ancient WIP

The marine's bolter is coming along.  I realize as I type this that I forgot to drill the bolter barrel out.  Ugh...will have to see if I can manage that with the banner attached. Otherwise, some text ought to go on the scroll along the side of the weapon housing - and I'll come up with a name for the shoulder pad scroll.

Some initial highlighting had happened here, particularly on the leather work. I like how that has turned out on the holster.

Dark Angels Ancient WIP

I need to select a suitable ancient symbol for the right shoulder pad.  I forget whether there is any source material for than in the codex. Otherwise, I'm pretty close to completing another model.  Hopefully I'll have the remaining work wrapped up before posting again later this week. Then it's either on to the Lieutenants or the Techmarine.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!
