WIP: Deathwatch Watch Captain w/jump pack - Part 3

Deathwatch Watch Captain with Jump Pack WIP Combi-melta

Time to showcase a bit more progress on the Deathwatch Watch Captain.I'm liking this model more and more as the paint gets laid down.  I started by adding some edge highlighting the black armor at last. I still haven't found my comfort zone here, but I have to admit that other recent projects have improved my edge highlighting skills and built confidence.

Barely visible on the left leg, I painted the strip of clothe wrapped around the thigh with P3 Menoth White Base and shaded it with GW Agrax Earthshade.

Now, that looks a lot better.  Next the cloak got some love.  I fixed some pooling issues I had (visible above) when the Agrax Earthshade was last applied.  Then set about with some highlights following my Custodes recipe for robes/capes. A final layer of Agrax Earthshade was put down over all, much more carefully this time, to blend it all together and add some additional shadows in the deepest folds. I love it!  Looking at the closeup, there is some extreme pooling around the rope...my add some highlight there or go back in with some thinned red to soften the edges of the heavy shadow.

Next the various gold details got two layers of highlights, first with Vallejo gold, then with Vallejo Silver.

After this, it was on to the combi-melta and details on the right arm.  I decided to break up the gunmetal with some brass/bronze on the barrel.  This was done with Vallejo Gold, shaded with GW Reikland Fleshshade. The front quarter or so was then shaded with a couple coats of GW Nuln Oil.  I'll do another layer or two until I'm satisfied with the scorching. Still some cleanup to do, but the weapon is coming along well now. The other side can be seen in the title photo above. And I realize while posting now that these weapon photos were taken before I had finished.  I wish I'd done a last shot with things cleaned up a bit more.  I don't think the scorching was even on yet here!

The blood drop on the shoulder pad got a little highlighting too while I was highlighting the red weapon casing. The model's base got a layer of dark Vallejo brown followed by a heavy wash with GW Agrax Earthshade. Nothing picture worthy at this point, but it should feature nicely in the final WIP post after all the proper highlighting is done.

Lots of cleanup for the final session.  And there are a handful of details such as skulls on the jump pack and iconography on the left leg that haven't been addressed. But this guy is very close to complete now and I look forward to showing him off DONE when next he appears in a post.

Until then...

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

    1. Thanks, Mike. I have plenty more to come, if only a bit slow with the rest of the hobby projects I'm trying to do in parallel. I really need to get some more veterans done so I can form some painted squads when the new codex drops!
