Greetings and welcome to DreadTober 2022. Do check out the main DreadTober blog site to check out the challenge and see all the great work the community contributes.  Here at 262Krieg, I'll be taking on a Relic Contemptor Dreadnought from Forge World, painted in I Legion colors.  One ting the Horus Heresy (30K) game seems to like is Contemptor dreadnoughts and I seem to have collected a large number of them over the years.

I originally built this dreadnought for the first edition of the Age of Darkness game.  Under those rules, Dark Angels (I Legion) had special heavy bolter ammunition (molecular acid, or something like that) that made these weapons more deadly.  That rule was removed in the second edition released earlier this year so I decided this dreadnought needed some other weapon options. So for the challenge I'll be painting the dreadnought with a power claw/plasmagun arms, a Conversion Beamer arm, and a twin-linked autocannon arm to go along with the two twin heavy bolter arms.  This should provide a fair number of options that go along with the other four dreadnoughts in the army - oh and the fifth from the new boxed set which I haven't even begun to think about building yet.  I have four more years of DreadTober projects  it seems!

This dreadnought is based on a couple stone pieces from the yard.  The relatively heavy stone provides good ballast to prevent the resin model from being easily knocked over which is great since resin can be brittle, and light.

To match the rest of the army, I use wood glue (white/PVA glue would work as well, of course) and a quick dunk in my tub of random, small sized railroad scenic gravel. I like wood glue for this because it's thicker (so less controlling it from running off the base) and seems to provide a more durable bond.  With white glue, I had the issue of bits flaking off on occasion, spoiling paint jobs.

Magnets were used to connect the lower arms with the shoulders.  These dreadnoughts don't come with sockets, so I used a 3/16ths inch drill bit and corresponding 1mm thick magnets to do the job. Here the dread is borrowing close combat arms for a demo. With a plethora of arms available for Contemptor dreadnoughts, this simple magnetization allows for lots of gaming options and future proofs them against rules changes over time that render some weapon choices weapon better than others from time to time.

So that's the build for this years project.  I have some priming to do on the extra arms, then I get stuck in with the paint work. DO check out the DreadTober website to keep up on the action this year. And come back form time to time through out the month of DreadTober to see how things turn out with this Relic Contemptor.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!
