DreadTober Week 2 Progress

DreadTober Horus Heresy Dark Angels Relic Contemptor Dreadnought WIP

Welcome back for week two of DreadTober 2022.  You can check out the week one progress from all of the participants here. There have been lots of great projects this year.  During week two, I began to tackle the details on this Legion Relic Contemptor Dreadnought, as well as adding in some Dark Angels heraldry.

The Talon this contemptor belongs to uses black and white checkers on the arm as a unit designation. The Relic Contemptor from Forge World has lots of extra details like this honor badge on the lower leg here.

The back is relatively plain by comparison.  Some highlights and weathering should make things a little more interesting. The skeleton under the black armor plates has been base coated and then shaded with GW Nuln Oil.

The checkers are al hand painted so far on this model. They are coming out fine so far.  I decided this DreadTober challenge would be a good time to try a little more free hand.  I normally rely on transfers for checkers.

This veteran warrior's personal heraldry is on the shields on the left shoulder and right leg. I will be adding some fun transfers there during week three.  The targeting lenses and helmet eye lens are base coated.  I had great fun on the sarcophagus with all that detail.  So far things are simply base coated and shaded. I'll use .005 micron pens to detail the seals and scrolls with some script at some point.

Here is a close up of the right arm.  I purposely chose larger checkers for the claw arm.  Sometimes, looking at everything together, I think I should have gone with smaller checkers.  Other times I'm fine with this result. There are many, many purity seals and oaths of moment on this dreadnought.

So that's where things stand as week two draws to a close.  Good progress has been made and I'm in good shape for transfers and highlights during week three.  Then I'll wrap up week four by completing the base along with any remaining bits on the model itself. I've slowed to one post-per-week during DreadTober because I haven't felt there was sufficient progress to warrant two posts-per-week. And I'm trying to remain focused on this project for the month, so there aren't any side builds or other hobby stuff going on in parallel to post about.

Best wishes go out to all of the other DreadTober participants.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

  2. Looking great, as a fellow checker painter, they're "fun" overall to paint, loving the heresy era Dark Angel dread.
