DreadTober Week 3 Progress

DreadTober Horus Heresy Dark Angels Relic Contemptor Dreadnought WIP

Welcome to DreadTober week three.  We're over the hump and headed back down towards the end of the month and project completion.  The I Legion Relic Contemptor Dreadnought is coming along quite well so far.

I started the week off by applying transfers to the dreadnought. The I Legion heraldry is diverse and confusing so I mixed some of the obvious with the less obvious. On the front here we have the Legion number and the Lion head, a show of loyalty to the primarch Lion El'Jonson. In the glare on the face of the right shoulder is a badge symbolizing a veteran of the Terran wars, prior to the primarch joining the Legion.

The Lion's winged sword badge, the later symbol of the I Legion, is featured on the left shoulder.

While membership in the Hexagrammaton (Ironwing) is displayed on the right. I'd like to get the symbol of the Hekatonystika on the dread somewhere, but I haven't decided where just yet. Maybe on the inside of one of the legs?

Personal heraldry is featured on the small shields on the chest and right leg armor.

The transfers were sealed with a flat coat, then it was on to highlights.

So many edges to line! Gold and red details have also been highlighted.  In addition, the targeting lenses have been painted in with a faux-lens effect that looks better on the table than in the pictures.  You can see an example above on the Autocannon arm, between the two barrels.

Lots of panel definition now.  Looks a little cartoon-ish in these pictures! I'm wondering now if I went a bit too bright on this grey highlights...

I really like how the claw arm has turned out, especially the claws themselves.  It's a bit more interesting with the light gold look rather than the standard silver metal on the rest of the weapons and skeleton.

Anyway, that's where I'm at.  I will now move to the base and when that is complete go back and clean up anything I missed before sealing the model in a flat lacquer.  There will be no problem hitting the end of the month deadline at this point.  I'm feeling pretty positive with this fella!

How are your projects going?

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

  1. The heraldry looks very nice. Really makes the Dark Angel's colour sheme unique!

    1. Thank you! Between on older original Forge World scheme and the newer relaunch of DA specific models with a brighter scheme (lots more red), there is a lot of middle ground to play with. Never mind the open ended symbology involved...

  2. Now that is just *chef's kiss* even without the base having been finished!
