The First Legion: A Test Model

Greeting Gamers.

As I get back up and running in my new hobby space, I have shown the light of hobby back on my Dark Angels.  Along with some hobby effort going into my 40K army, I have been champing at the bit to go after a 30K force.  Not for the game so much, but for the pure joy of finally modelling the First Legion without endless scratch building and compromise. A combination of the Betrayal at Calth boxed game and the recently released Forge World First Legion upgrades have made for some promising fun! These will be true representations of forces from the pre-Heresy First Legion!

Below is a test build and paint scheme for a 30K First Legion marine.  This model will become part of a 5-man heavy support squad.  I wanted something very different for bases compared with the balance of my 40k armies which use primarily sandy/earthy schemes.  So I invested in "steel plating" resin bases from Secret Weapon Miniatures. I think these make for a good theme for this 30K force as I imagine them campaigning within orbital defense stations, within the bowels of great warships, within the great forges of the Mechanicum, etc..

I started by mounting the model on a old cork stopper and basing it with Army Painter black primer. I've always based my miniatures before priming and would hold the bases, or the models, while painting.  Sometimes this resulted in some paint being worn off during painting but for the most part I was just transferring a lot of oils from by skin to the model during painting. Not to mention fussing with not getting model paint on the bases and base paint on the model. So I'm trying to improve in that aspect with this project.  I don't need or really expect to play with this force, so there is no rush to get them table-ready.

I reached this stopping point and flat-coated the model to seal the paint job.  It'll stay in this state while I plan and apply transfers, then consider how I want to complete the highlighting and weathering.  I stuck close to the Forge World imagery from book six of their Horus Heresy hardback series and from their website.

To me this is now the modern canon for what First Legion marines looked like. I will get some better shots of the completed model.  These pictures are quite washed and I didn't realize that while taking them late last night. I'll leave you with a few more images of the test model.

Comments are welcome. Hopefully I'll have some completed pics to put up here soon.

The test model has been painted entirely with Vallejo model and game color paints. I love the dropper bottles (I have need moving certain GW paints to these types of bottles, especially the Lahmian Medium) and the colors and coverage.

A predator tank and three Contemptor Dreadnoughts waiting the wings for my to practice a scheme for the vehicles of this force.  One day, these may be joined by Rhino transports, a 30K mark of Land Raider and possibly an additional support tank or two (Sicaran anyone?).

Until next post, Happy Gaming!

A Dark Angels follow-up...

After further unpacking, I realized I had left out a decent percentage of my force; more than just a couple drop pods.  After unpacking and adding these forgotten Unforgiven, the array for battle now looks like this...

Dark Angels WIP

Unearthed were:
  • dread drop pod (actually two, but that's for another time)
  • 2 troop drop pods
  • a third speeder (now two with missile pods)
  • another 3 bikes (for a total of 9 plus the two attack bikes)
  • a 3rd tactical squad (from Dark Vengeance) and rhino (also convertable to a razorback)
  • a techmarine and servitor retinue
  • a chaplain on bike and a chaplain with jump pack (for a total of 5 chaplains).
  • an older librarian in power armor (for a total of 3 now)
  • old models for Azreal, Asmodai, and Ezekiel
  • An old metal company master
  • The new finecast banner bearer
  • a 10-man veteran squad (not shown as their load out of stormbolters is no longer sanctioned)
Now I am  content!  I need to update the veteran squad for the latest 7th edition rules and codex and return them to service.  Then I think I will build a new army spreadsheet to track this force better.  I have never had a formal build plan for them, nor a way to track progress.  So far the 5th company captain, his command squad and the first two tactical squads are table-top ready.  I need to complete the two squad rhinos and add a suitable command vehicle when the landraider or a drop pod isn't used for the task. That fills out compulsory units for the force-org.  Though with formations and the 7th edition environment, this hardly seems as important as it once was.

There are also models to be built - a flyer and black knight bikers for the 2nd company along with their company master, Samuel!  I have never been much for Ravenwing, but they shine in the current rule set and codex so I should really give these important members of the chapter more time and attention!!

So...the plan is to alternate updating this force with building out some 1st Legion models from the Horus Heresy.  I Love the flavor and the different models and paint scheme will no doubt add variety.

Oh...and I shouldn't neglect the un-built Mechanicum force waiting int he wings either...or the Red Hunters I started right before packing up for the move...or the inquisition vehicles to support the Inquisitor and retinue I posted last year...or the DEATH KORPS! That is where this whole blog journey began after all...

Plenty to do in 2016, regardless.  I wish the best for your own hobby progress and achievements.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Happy New Year!

While it has been a while since my last post, the wait has hopefully been worth it.  The family moved house last August (though anyone who has moved a family knows the process starts way before the actual move...) and my old basement hobby man-cave has transitioned to a similar, but more spacious and now dedicated, basement hobby man-cave!

2015 finished off with the space roughed out, and an actual game of 40k!  Woohoo!

The new hobby man-cave!

Decent storage as shown and a good sized painting/modelling space.

Modelling area, complete with TV!

And a small dedicated air brushing space which should soon feature a spray booth and venting system to deal with any fumes.

More storage and an airbrush station at top left of photo...

The addition of the foam floor tiles has really dressed up the space and will add hours of comfort for tired feet during long games.  Also, the dedicated gaming table will mean games can be left in progress for weeks or months (?!) as necessary to meet the busy schedule of my gaming buddies and our families.

To kick things off proper, we finished 2015 with a custom three-way 40K game featuring Tau, Necrons, and Grey Knights. With the game ending at the conclusion of turn 4, the Tau took away the victory!  Xenos filth that they are...I have no doubt the Grey Knights would have persevered had the Emperor granted further turns!  Still, families and all, we still got in ~5 hours of good gaming fun.

Start of turn two, Necron reserves appear to contest the objectives!

It was interesting to play a game of 40k with three player turns per game turn.  We chose not to do a 2-on-1 game as we typically do, and quickly designed a format for three players per turn.
  • We chose "maelstrom of war" and used the objectives unmodified.  The only exception was to re-roll/draw any objective that was impossible for a given force (i.e. Tau re-rolled a psychic objective as they had no psykers and couldn't achieve the objective).
  • We then added an "initiative" roll to the start of each turn.  This would prevent one player from always going last in a turn and added some fun dynamics - you could potentially get two turns in a row if you went last one turn, but first the next!  We used a simple d6 roll off, re-rolling ties until there was a clear 1-2-3 order. This roll was made at the start of each new turn and worked well to balance the turns.
  • We used objective markers as normal, with each player getting two markers to lay down as described in the main rule book for two players.
  • For deployment, we marked out three separate areas, one 2'x1' area at the center-left board edge, one 2'x1' area center bottom and one in the upper-right corner which i think was 16"x16" on each table edge of the corner and 1' deep into the board. We were playing 1250pts each (if memory serves) and started deployment with only a single troops choice; everything else went into reserve and we used standard reserve rules - in the spirit of patrol missions.
  • We mixed things up further by declaring that reserves that did not deep strike would arrive from a random board edge at least 6" from an enemy deployment zone (so you could come right in behind an enemy, but could arrive pretty close as evidenced by the Necron stalker starting to climb into the Grey Knight-held chapel ruins in the photo above!).  Otherwise, standard deep strike rules applied.
I think I got all the special rules/modification that were used.  The game was great fun and I look forward to more games in the new space.  I invested in a couple 4'x6' mats from Gamemat.eu and have not been disappointed.  Much more fun than playing on plain grey or green felt as my group has done since the mid 90's...

Last but not least, I decided to array my functional Dark Angels army (not including all the various spare parts and "optional" weapons figures) on the new table en mass for a phot op while unpacking various bits.

Dark Angels WIP
Combined Elements of the Dark Angels

From left to right we have:
  • Deathwing (40 terminator suits, a venerable dread and a Landraider Crusader)
  • Ravenwing (2 speeders, 6 bikes and an attack bike)
  • 5th company (60 power armor suits, 4 dreads, Landraider, 2 whirlwinds, 2 predators, a vindicator and a razorback)
  • two librarians and three chaplains.
  • Belial
  • a custom 5th company master
  • the actual 5th company master from the Dark Vengeance boxed set.
Most squads have alternate models for certain heavy/special weapons I might want to swap out.  Some terminators are magnetized for optional weapon load outs. The rhinos, razorback, and one whirlwind all convert between the rhino and razorback chassis.  I also have two troop drop pods and a dread drop pod not in the picture above.  I haven't unearthed them from the piles of boxes yet. And an unbuilt Samuel on jetbike...probably other stuff one I finish unpacking...

I resolve to make more progress on this force in 2016 as well as adding some 1st legion models for the Horus Heresy era, though I don't see myself playing any actual 30k games.  I have always wanted to model the original 1st legion ever since reading the Dark Angels back story, and especially after ready the Horus Heresy books from The Black Library! The Dark Angels where not my first army (I started with 2nd edition orks!), but they have remained my main army since 3rd edition.

So that's where I'm at as we swing full speed into 2016.  I look forward to sharing more hobby as I settle into the new space.  Check back to see and keep me honest!

I have become a veteran of the The Long War and can't say enough good things about the approach to "bringing hobby back" that they so freely abd passionately espouse on their site and through their various videos and podcasts.  Might be something to check out...

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Honored Imperium

Honored Imperium Space Marine Statue Front
This month I took a break from the inquisition and other projects to practice a bit with bronze and verdigris.  The Space Marine Captain statue seemed just the right place to start. A brooding old fool, but I'm quite pleased with how he turned out.  The piece will add some interest and flare the the table top for certain.  I used Vallejo Verdigris Glaze for this project...I'll try the new GW equivalent for another at some point.  The Vallejo glaze was quite thick and I thinned it significantly before going to work.  The model was done almost entirely with air brush, but the verdigris was brushed on, followed by various dry brushing passes with mix of Vallejo rust and bright brass, followed by Vallejo bright brass alone.  The base was done in greys with a final light pass of white.  Prior to dry brushing, the base was washed with various browns and greens.

A final flat coat with the airbrush sealed the deal.

Honored Imperium Space Marine Statue Back
I think the back shows I need much more practice with verdigris; especially on large, flat areas...

The Retinue for Inquisitor Russ!

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor Retinue

Here is the retinue for Inquisitor Hadrian Russ.  An acolyte, four crusaders, five death cult assassins, and three servo skulls.  Having completed the Inquisitor, it's time to move on and complete the retinue.
Ordo Malleus Inquisitor Retinue WIP

I kept the dark grimy feel form the inquisitor and adopted a palette of grey/black, red and gold overall.  A splash of color on the acolyte helps her stand out, I hope.  I'm really excited with the crusaders.  I used decals from a witch hunter's sheet to get Inquisition iconography for the left shoulder and a straight white skull for the right.  All the unit insignia they need under the circumstances.

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor and Retinue

Still quite a bit to do so stay tuned. I'll continue to update the post as I go to detail my progress...

Happy gaming!
