Results from the 2023/24 Hobby Season

So we've come to the end of another hobby season and it is time to reflect on the season past to discuss what got completed, what did not, and showcase the fruits of my labor.  Here's where the 2023/24 To Do List stands as the hobby season wraps up. Items crossed out were completed, the rest were not. I rarely looked back at the list for most of the season so it's interesting for me to see the results. How did I track against my expectations for the hobby at the start of the season?

The Horus Heresy

  • Complete two Dark Angels Legion Characters
  • Complete two Dark Angels Legion Infantry Units

Warhammer 40K

  • Complete a Ballistus Dreadnought from the Leviathan launch box
    • DreadTober 2023
  • Complete two Dark Angels Units
    • Chaplain on Bike and Invader ATV
  • Complete Lion El'Jonson

Adeptus Titanicus

  • Complete Legio Tempestus Warmaster Iconoclast Titan
    • The titan is built, with some magnetization required
  • Complete Legio Ignatum Warlord Titan
  • Complete some more weapon options

Aeronautica Imperialis

  • Complete Adeptus Astartes Planes
    • Completed 7 Horus Heresy era planes

Bonus Projects

  • Complete Dark Angels Primaris Repulsor
  • Complete Dark Angels Company Heroes unit
  • Complete Two More Blackstone Fortress Characters
  • A new surprise 40k faction (Tyranids)?
    • Leviathan box set Tyranids built

Here is what got completed that was NOT on the list for the season:

Legions Imperialis

  • 10 Dark Angels Legion Rhino Transports
  • 4 Dark Angels Legion Spartan Assault Tanks
  • 6 Dark Angels Legion Land Raider Proteus Explorators
  • 4 Dark Angels Legion Kratos Heavy Tanks
  • 6 Dark Angels Legion Predator Battle Tanks
  • 6 Dark Angels Legion Sicaran Battle Tanks
  • 9 buildings (scenery)

I had not foreseen how much would be released for Legions Imperialis, nor how fun it was going to be to paint. I started well along my To Do list until I chose to paint the Rhino transports. Then I went off the rails with excitement and inspiration driven by these tiny tanks.

Other than Legions Imperialis, I stuck to my choice of game systems and made sure to put progress on those projects that mattered most to me. At the beginning of the season, for instance, I got really into painting 40K Dark Angels and would have cleared my 40K to do list had Legions Imperialis not stolen the mojo.  For the Horus Heresy, I did make the conscious decision to focus on Legion Imperialis and Titanicus instead of the the Age of Darkness, although I did build a mk3 armored command squad for fun. :)

If I haven't miscounted, that's a fine 61 models completed for the season.  If you are interested, pictures of each completion follow after the break.  It was a great season and I'm already looking ahead to the 2024/25 Season of Wood! But more of that in my sent post.

Season of Scenery 2024 - TO DONE

Adeptus Titanicus/Legions Imperialis Terrain
Greetings and welcome back.  Today I'm sharing the project I completed for Season of Scenery 2024.  I painted up nine buildings for Adeptus Titanicus and Legions Imperialis. Eight buildings are built from the Adeptus Titanicus Civitas kits.  The ninth is a ruin built from an old Epic plastic ruins set. Here are some of these buildings after being built back in November 2019.

Adeptus Titanicus/Legions Imperialis Terrain WIP

It's nice to get paint on some of them.  I was able to prime and base coat the full collection of buildings (more than is shown above), but I left six or seven on the table for now, not completed. I'll come around to them before too long...hopefully not in another five years. 😂 But for now, here's a big stamp o' DONE for Season of Scenery 2024!

If you are interested in the close ups, keep scrolling down after the break. Due to the symmetrical nature of the buildings, some pics appear to be duplicates but are actually different faces of the same building. I also want to point out that my goal was to make interesting terrain as a back drop to AT and LI games.  I didn't want the building to detract from or out shine the game pieces themselves (titans and various armor and infantry units for those games). There is a lot of detail on these buildings and one could certainly go to town on them as one might any individual model.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!!

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Aircraft for Legions/Aeronautica Imperialis - TO DONE

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Aircraft for Legions Imperialis and Aeronautica Imperialis

Surprise!  Out of the blue comes a flight of Dark Angels aircraft from the Horus Heresy for games of Legions Imperialis, or Aeronautica Imperialis.  As I close out the hobby season, I really wanted some air support for the First Legion. A pair of Fire Raptors escorts in a pair of Storm Eagles as they drop detachments of infantry, all while a trio of Xiphon Interceptors provide air cover.

These planes were a lot of fun to paint. The recipe I use can be found in one of the tabs above. I basically painted them in the same manner as the tanks.

Legion heraldry was applied to the wings and left side. The wing leader got a laurel on the cheek below and a little right of the cockpit glass. I painted up lascannon sponsons, but they are magnetized allowing me to use heavy bolters or autocannon as well. I just haven't painted them up yet.

I found some checkered transfers to cut down and apply to the rear doors.

Some Dark Angels icons adorn the right sides along with a small vehicle number on the cheek, just below the cockpit glass. I continue to make use of the smaller legion transfers from the 28mm Age of Darkness transfer sheet.

The Storm Eagles will make great transports. I'll likely add a few more at some point depending on what I end up wanted to use in games.  There are SO many transport options for the Astartes in Legions Imperialis.

More Legion iconography.

These planes are assigned to the Stormwing for troop deployment.

Here's a look at the bottom of the hulls.

Last up, we have the Xiphon Interceptors. I used gold Legion symbols on the squadron leader.

Plenty of space for Legion colors on the bottom too.  It's good to know whose planes are buzzing your positions, after all.

Aircraft Bases WIP for Legions Imperialis

The bases were painted in a light, simple style.  I honestly don't know yet how I want my bases for Legions Imperialis to look, as I've only painted tanks so far. Some dirty down rust attempts to add interest to the odd mechanical bits in the center of each base. I fully expect to either re-base and repaint these bases, or to put them aside and modify/paint new ones. The stems are not glued in, and after painting and sealing the bases they fit very snug. This will allow me to pull the clear posts out if/when I decide to modify them.

I'll take a big stamp o' DONE for this project as I wrap up the 2023/24 hobby season.  I owe a TO DONE post for my Season of Scenery 2024 project. Then I'll post a retrospective on the season and follow up with a to do list for the 2024/25 hobby season. Lots of busy work, but then we're back at the painting and modelling once again. So until then...

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

On the Workbench [August] - Horus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Praetor and Legion Command Squad WIP
For the Lion!

Greetings and welcome back. Today I'm sharing a bit of a palate cleanser from my Season of Scenery 2024 project. I really like building kits...like, I *really*, *really* do...and so building something always helps me break painter's block...or really any kind of hobby doldrums.

I had been discussing the recent Horus Heresy Legion Command Squad in mkIII Armour with a friend when it hit me.  I needed a bunch of sword and board boys for the First Legion!  I think these would be fun to run in a Zone Mortalis game, or just generally in any Horus Heresy game, spilled out of a suitable assault transport.  I would pass on the standard (for Zone Mortalis), but it's compulsory in the unit so there it is. So I get another fun hobby opportunity into the bargain!

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Praetor WIP

This idea finally gave me a reason to build one of the plastic Praetors from the Age of Darkness boxed set.  I've had these sitting around since the launch, waiting for the right project.  I replaced the volkite charger with a boarding shield from my bits collection...I don't know which upgrade or unit kit it came from originally.  In hindsight, I could have just used the fifth shield form the command squad since the Standard Bearer doesn't get one.  I like the utilitarian look though; this Praetor is a no-nonsense dude who just grabs up what is needed when he hits the field.  No waiting on the serfs to deliver up some ancient artifact form the vaults. 😂

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Praetor WIP

As we all know, the scale creep is real.  When you consider that this Dark Angels Praetor from Forge World (of old) is a pretty recent model, it's astounding how much bigger the plastic Praetor is.  With the bare head, he could just about pass as the Lion here!  Speaking of which, I long ago decided my First Legion models would go to war in the Grim Darkness with helmets on...safety first!  But this bare head just perfectly suited the 'Knights of Caliban' feel I wanted for this Praetor and Command squad. I really love this simple conversion for the First and it's sad that I'll likely always favor it over the very nice Forge World model.

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIPHorus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIP

The Legion Command Squad is built pretty much stock with the exception of shoulder pads and head swaps/conversions. The resin mkIII shoulder pads are a bit chunky, honestly, but the aesthetic fits with the shield arm for extra damage absorption. Ya gotta love the persistent over-the-top Warhammer vibes! I added Dark Angels 40K helmet wings from the bits box to the mkIII helmet in the kit. pretty easy glue-on conversion.  As you'll see in the title pic above, I ended up snipping the spike off.  I like the spike, but in the end, there's just too much going on up there.

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIPHorus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIP

I used a mkIV resin helmet on this Chosen (when did the good guys start using this term?!).  While I used a studded shoulder pad from the kit on the Standard Bearer, I decided to match resin pads for the rest of the squad. I again thank the bits box gods for their bounty.  30 years of Warhammer should count for something, right?

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIPHorus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIP

I added a nuncio-vox to this Chosen, since you know, Command Squad. Seemed appropriate.  I did not add the helmet attachment as I figure these advanced First Legion helms have that crap built in...to like the wings or whatever. 😁No need for unsightly bolt-on attachments here.

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIPHorus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIP

Now we start to get a little silly, honestly.  And I would never have gone this route, except the Deathwing Companions have these wings...and they are the Dark Angels Legion specific Command Squad option.  So here, I'm making this squad share the aesthetic...and they even would double as additional Companions in a pinch, if the Companions weren't too stuck up to carry boarding shields.  Seriously, what is up with the rarity of boarding shields? Almost no other units can take them...I guess in the Grim Darkness one can always rip off a hatch, door or other suitable object to use as a shield. So why issue them as official war gear, right?

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIPHorus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Command Squad WIP

The crazy winged helmets are made by cutting the wings (very carefully) from 40K mkVII helmets (thanks again, o'holy bits box for your bounty!) and then gluing them on to the mkIII helmets from the kit.  This was accomplished by cutting slots into the sides of the helmets with an x-acto knife and then gluing the trimmed down wings into the slots. Once painted up, no one should be the wiser. Oh, and I trimmed off the helmet spikes, once again.  I would have just used the mkVII helmets as-is, but I figured that was just too much foreshadowing for the project. I love the lore and do try to cleave to it as closely as possible. That said, I would never have imagined mkIII helmets with these wings if it hadn't been for the Deathwing Companions.  If the design existed for their (mkIV?) helms, why wouldn't some armorer in the Legion have added them to mkIII?  I image this as a retrofit, following the ascendance of the Lion as Primarch.

Horus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Librarian Consul WIPHorus Heresy Dark Angels Legion Champion Consul WIP

Once you have the glue and bits out, it's hard to stop building sometimes.  In this case, I took the opportunity to build a Legion Librarian Consul and a legion Champion Consul that I had sitting about since their release.  I kept the Librarian stock, due to their allegiance to the Librarius and the need for specialized equipment.  A head swap would have looked odd and the the Legion shoulder pad is hidden under the cloak anyway. I added a mkVI Dark Angels head to the Champion Consul.  I felt he was pretty suitable otherwise, as-is.

And that ended my build session for the Horus Heresy Dark Angels. Eight new HQ models for the force.  I'm looking forward to putting more paint on the First Legion in the 2024/25 hobby season.  I had put two HQ and two other units on the TO DO list for 2023/24, but it looks like I'm only going to get this build done. Legions Imperials really took the spotlight this season with so many fun tiny tanks to paint!

As the 2023/24 season winds down, I'll post up my Season of Scenery 2024 completions and then close out the season with a re-cap post of what I was able to accomplish for the year. I'm maybe 50/50 on what I set out to do, but 100% on overall hobby value and completions (as measure by my typical progress!).

Until then,

 Cheers and Happy gaming!

SEASON OF SCENERY 2024 - Adeptus Titanicus/Legions Imperialis Terrain - Part 3

Adeptus Titanicus Legions Imperials Terrain WIP

Greetings and welcome back!  The summer has been in full swing and my painting time has been reduced as a result.  However, progress has been made!  Today I'm sharing the latest three buildings for Season of Scenery 2024.  What started as Ecclesiastic (in my mind) ended up as fancy head quarters/offices for for three factions of the Imperium: the Collegia Titanica (aka Adeptus Titanicus), Aeronautica Imperialis (Imperial Navy), and the Imperialis Auxilia (Imperial Army). Thanks to the recent 8mm games, there are plenty of fun transfers to choose form for these buildings.

With the fancy gothic windows, I decided to go for a lighted stain-glass/colored glass effect to ass interest and break up the tall monochrome look of these buildings.  I also kept the dark roof look.  For this Imperialis Auxilia building, I decided to add this dark armored bad around the second tier. It came out kinda goofy, in my opinion, so I did NOT do this with the other two.

I added verdigris to weather the dome and pointy bits.  Not sure it's at all how a roof might weather, but I don't hate the look.

Adeptus Titanicus Legions Imperials Terrain WIPAdeptus Titanicus Legions Imperials Terrain WIP

I varied the colors in the windows to add additional interest between the buildings.  I wanted them to be different enough to be owned by separate factions, even though they basically look the same, due to how the kits work. None of this will matter on the table during a game, I imagine.  But it's just how I hobby. 😂

That's it for now.  I have five more Civitas buildings to go I believe.  I may stop here though for Season of Scenery.  Not sure yet.  I slowed way down (even with other vacation and family distractions this summer), and it might be prudent to have a bit of a palate cleanser before finishing off this terrain to avoid burnout and going sloppy on the last few.

If I call it, I'll put up a finished post for Season of Scenery 2024 that shows all the buildings together.  If I carry on, you could expect to see more buildings.  Regardless, September kicks off the 2024/25 Hobby Season and we'll be on to something else no doubt!  I'll have a wrap up for 2023/24 posted by the end of this month too.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!
